What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?
- Knocked-Out Tooth - A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved when treated within 30 to 60 minutes of the injury. If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown, not the root, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and place it back in the socket or store it in a glass of milk while you call our office immediately.
- Severe Toothache or Dental Pain - Significant, persistent, or worsening tooth pain is often a sign of infection, advanced decay, or nerve involvement that requires prompt professional evaluation and treatment.
- Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Tooth - A significantly broken or cracked tooth, particularly one causing pain or sensitivity, needs to be evaluated quickly to prevent further damage or infection.
- Lost or Damaged Crown or Bridge - A lost or broken crown or bridge leaves your tooth exposed and vulnerable. Contact our office as soon as possible to prevent discomfort or further damage to the underlying tooth.
- Dental Abscess or Infection - A dental abscess is a serious, potentially dangerous infection that requires immediate attention. Signs include severe throbbing pain, swelling, fever, or a visible bump or pimple on the gums.
- Soft Tissue Injuries - Cuts, lacerations, or injuries to the lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums that are bleeding significantly or do not stop with gentle pressure require prompt care.
- Lost or Broken Dental Appliance - A broken or lost retainer, denture, night guard, or other appliance may need prompt attention, particularly if sharp edges are causing irritation or the appliance is critical to your ongoing treatment.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
- If a tooth is knocked out: Handle the tooth by the crown only, rinse gently without scrubbing the root, and attempt to reinsert it into the socket. If reinsertion is not possible, store it in milk or saliva and call our office immediately.
- If a tooth is broken or cracked: Rinse your mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and call our office to be seen as soon as possible.
- If you have a severe toothache: Rinse with warm salt water, avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum tissue, and call our office for a prompt evaluation.
- If you have a lost crown or bridge: Keep the restoration if possible and call our office. In some cases, a temporary dental cement available at pharmacies can provide short-term protection until your appointment.
- If you have a dental abscess: Do not attempt to treat an abscess at home. Call our office immediately or go to an emergency room if the swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing.
